Energy resolution of alpha particles in a microbulk Micromegas detector at high pressure Argon and Xenon mixtures

چکیده
The latest Micromesh Gas Amplification Structures (Micromegas) are achieving outstanding energy resolution for low energy photons, with values as low as 11% FWHM for the 5.9 keV line of Fe in argon/isobutane mixtures at atmospheric pressure. At higher energies (MeV scale), these measurements are more complicated due to the difficulty in confining the events in the chamber, although there is no fundamental reason why resolutions of 1% FWHM or below could not be reached. There is much motivation to demonstrate experimentally this fact in Xe mixtures due to the possible application of Micromegas readouts to the Double Beta Decay search of Xe, or in other experiments needing calorimetry and topology in the same detector. In this paper, we report on systematic measurements of energy resolution with state-of-the-art Micromegas using a 5.5 MeV alpha source in high pressure Ar/isobutane mixtures. Values as low as 1.8% FWHM have been obtained, with possible evidence that better resolutions are achievable. Similar measurements in Xe, of which a preliminary result is also shown here, are under progress.

Many detection methods have been applied to detect radon gas. Due to the low noise and high resolution of gas detectors compared to semiconductor detectors or scintillation detectors, using them to detect alpha radiation is very considerable. Microstrip proportional detector is also included in this group and it has not been used for the detection of radon. In this article, response of the micr...
متن کاملScintillation of Xenon doped Liquid Argon in the BACON Detector
The BACON liquid argon (LAr) scintillation detector prototype will be used to measure 1 2 intensity, promptness , and decay behavior for pure LAr and xenon (Xe) doped LAr mixtures. 3 The goal is to aid in planning, cost reduction, and improved detection for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) [6]. The scintillation of LAr is in the vacuum ultra-violet (VUV), requiring detectors to u...

We investigate the gas gain behaviour and the energy resolution of a triple-GEM configuration in gas mixtures of argon, krypton and xenon with ten and thirty percent of carbon dioxide at pressures between 1 and 3 bar. Since the signal widths affect the dead time behaviour of the detector we present signal length measurements to evaluate the use of the triple-GEM in time-resolved X-ray imaging.

By reducing the dimensions of hollow cathodes into the hundred micrometer range, stable, direct current, high ~atmospheric! pressure glow discharges in rare gases, rare gas–halide mixtures and in air could be generated. The electron energy distribution in these microdischarges is non-Maxwellian, with a pronounced high-energy tail. The high electron energy together with the high gas density, whi...
متن کاملProperties of some gas mixtures used in tracking detectors
This report summarizes some useful data on the transport characteristics of gas mixtures which are required for detection of charged particles in gas detectors. The requirements for high luminosity tracking are stringent and different at low and high momenta, representing a compromise between a fast gas mixture, small diffusion properties and having a small Lorentz angle, but high primary ioniz...
